TEPCO Claims ALPS Decontamination System To Be Operational By End Of Year

July 31st, 2014

TEPCO hopes to have two new installations of ALPS completed in September and October of this year. The company is also now claiming that the current system has been able to remove considerable amounts of additional types of radiation down to below regulatory limits, though amounts of these isotopes still exist in the water. The water would also still contain tritium, something ALPS can not remove.

By adding additional tanks and changing a filter media being used they claim to have been able to remove more of various isotopes. They did not elaborate on corrosion issues that have plagued the system so it is hard to determine if those problems have been fully resolved.

TEPCO has considerable help with this project. Toshiba and the Japanese government have played a leading role in developing the system. The system still lacks full regulatory approval from the NRA.
